Utagawa Toyokuni (Japanese: 歌川豊国; 1769 in Edo – 24 February 1825 in Edo), also often referred to as Toyokuni I, to distinguish him from the members of his school who took over his gō (art-name) after he died, was a great master of ukiyo-e, known in particular for his kabuki actor prints. Utagawa Toyokuni I Kneeling actor and standing beauty holding a tray of clothes, from the series “Fuji in Summer Matched with Beautiful Women (Natsu no Fuji bijin awase)”, 1801 Yamatoya: Iwai Hanshiro IV as Katanaya Ohana, from the series “Portraits of Actors on Stage (Yakusha butai no sugata-e)”, 1794 Utagawa Toyokuni (Toyokuni I) was a Japanese Ukiyo-e known for his prints of erotica, aristocracy, and kabuki actors. His wood block prints of the theater were what distinguished him from his peers, as he portrayed actors costumed on stage rather than seated in formal dress. Toyokuni Utagawa was one of the great printmakers of the late 18th century who made himself known by his ukiyo-e of beautiful women and later of actors. As the head of the Utagawa school he was also the most influential man on the next generation of ukiyo-e designers.
